About
Welcome to Union Pacific’s Elmwood and Marigny River Subdivisions, an n-scale model railroad.
This layout is a freelance layout. That means the towns, locations, industries, etc.. are not necessarily based on the real world. Its more of mashup of different ideas I’ve seen on a variety of layouts. It gives me the ability to build what I want to build without having to worry if it “makes sense” or not.
The overall layout size and track plan is based on the Model Railroader project layout, the Salt Lake Route. The Marigny River side is based on the Donner River portion of Pelle Søeborg’s Daneville and Donner River layout, while the town side is based on the MRR Salt Lake Route.
I always liked the sound of Pelle’s layout title, so I went with something similar for this layout. As for the names themselves, Elmwood comes from the place where I met my wife, and Marigny (MER-ih-nee) comes from the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood in New Orleans (I’m a New Orleans native). I thought it sounded like a good river name.
So about the layout itself…
Elmwood is home to the Dixie Paper mill, a paper complex that produces bulk paper materials. The bulk material is shipped out by rail and truck to smaller Dixie manufacturing plants where it is made in products such as paper cups and plates. The mill receives lumber loads by rail, and sends out bulk materials by box car destinated for plants on the East coast. West coast shipments leave by truck and our brought to a local intermodal yard. Here they are shipped out by unit train across country.
The Union Pacific Railroad also operates a local switcher train based out of the intermodal yard.
Amtrak has a small station platform in Elmwood that serves the City of New Orleans. Trains only stop here when a pickup/dropoff is scheduled.
