Weathering Rails Part 2

April 21st, 2010

I was just playing around with the paint pens last night to see how each color looks and what not on the concrete ties.  Here’s the results (Sorry, pics didn’t come out as good as I thought.  Needed better lighting).

1) ‘Rust’ color

From left to right we have:

- Applied to ties and rail, wiped from ties with a kleenex
- Applied to ties and rail
- Applied to rail

As expected, it has too much of an orange color.

2) ‘Rail Brown’ color

From left to right we have:

- Applied to ties and rail, wiped from ties with a kleenex
- Applied to ties and rail
- Applied to rail

3) ‘Rail Tie Brown’ color

For this one I painted the ties with Rail Tie Brown, and the rails with Rail Brown.

From left to right we have:

- Applied to ties and rail, wiped from ties with a kleenex
- Applied to ties and rail

I liked the look of the “wiped” ties here.   Gives a good grimy concrete kind of look.

The wiped ties achieve the look that I was suggesting – muddied concrete. I’d go with that, ans then a thin wash of either india ink or Polly Scale Tarnished black for the oil stains down the center.
