I like the plan, especially given your space considerations. And routing the main behind the scene will add visual interest – imagine a train of auto racks passing behind the mill that provided the raw steel for their frames!
I haven’t decided for sure yet if I’m going to put the Electric Furnace in there. On “paper” it looks like everything will fit, but I’ll have to first get the blast furnace and coke ovens up on the shelf to see what kinda space they really take up.
Also, other than dropping off/picking up raw/finished good cars, I most likely won’t do any operation moves within the complex itself (not my thing really), but I wanna at least make it *look* like it’s logically operational ya know.
I’m a OS X user too, so I’m curious what software you are using there. It’s very frustrating that there are so few “good” programs for model railroad design on OS X.
I used to use Rail Modeller, but after there version 2 update or something I found their interface a little clunky. I also prefer Empire Expresses Flex track ability (you can make it as long/short as you want and specify a minimum radius).

Thanks for the comment.

Brakeman, I’m using Empire Express for my layout designs.
