GERN Re-design

December 30th, 2008

As I worked more on some recent kits and finished painting some others, one thing I kept thinking 09330000003249about the the GERN area, and that it looked a little a plain to me.

GERN, for those that don’t know, is a fictitious company created/operated by doctorwayne at the-gauge.net. It’s a industy to have a little fun with. Create a fun backstory, then a product created with the made up product FLUX product that GERN mines, etc.. etc.. My plant will produce the pruduct Fluxoride, a component used in the making of Transparent Aluminum (yes, a Star Trek reference there).

So anyway, I wanted to make the area look more…. industrial looking. Not just a few place faced buildings. So I ordered a Walther’s Blast Furnace kit and a Coke/Quencher kit. I’ll tie the09330000003806se two kits into the existing track plan in the area hopefully (mainly to avoid redoing those crazy turnouts. Now, I know these two kits are intended for use in a steel mill, but that’s the fun part of modeling. You can make anything into anything you want. I also have a extra North Island Refinery kit I can probably toss into the mix as well.

I’m looking forward to getting this kits and working them into the plant. It shouls really give the GERN plant that industrial look I’m after.

I’ve been looking at some parts of this for my oil refinery. While it wouldn’t build out right as is, I think many of the stacks, pipes etc would add to the character of my North Island Refinery kit.

I’ve been looking at some plastruct parts for my refinery. They’ve got a good selection of tubing, elbows and valves for use as a piperack between the oil storage and the equipment.

They also have larger tubes and then you can get the cap piece for the particular size to make a vessel. Just slap on some piping and ladders, etc.. more vessels!
