Helix Progress

October 7th, 2008

Getting close to finishing up the helix.  Got roughly 2 more turns to go.

I decided I didn’t really like how the Heki road material looked so I took it out.  I started also building up some foam risers for some of the locations of buildings.  I’ll go through and had some terrain in the rest of the empty spaces with paper, and covered with masking tape to form the terrain top.  I’ll then put down a new road using WS Smooth-it.

And while that’s going on, I put up the cliff in the corner.  It’s not glued in yet, but looks pretty good.

Joe Fugate’s Video Series

October 7th, 2008

I just recently watched a few of the videos from Joe Fugate’s series available from http://model-trains-video.com on scenery design, and I learned a lot of techniques that I’ll be applying to my layout.

The two that I really liked were the Painless Backdrops and Basic Terrain. It’s really given me ideas on how to to expand my cliff wall scene on my lower level to throughout the entire level, using a painted mounted backdrop scene and some subtle terrain build ups. The backdrop ridge, excellent idea two. I could go on and on, heh.

I downloaded individual videos in HD Format to my computer, so I can watch segments pertaining to my layout (ie: I don’t have trestle bridge so I didn’t need that segment). There are various download formats at different prices if your PC can’t handle HD video. There are also many more videos available on DVD as well. So check ‘em out!
